About Build-A-Counter

Build-A-Counter is a countertop resurfacing company based in Phoenix, Arizona. We pour lab stone — a hand-troweled mineral-and-polymer surface — directly over the countertops you already have. No slab. No demolition. No two-week kitchen teardown. Most homes are finished in a single 8–12 hour day.

Why we do it this way

Replacing countertops in the Valley is expensive for a reason that has nothing to do with the stone itself. A granite or quartz job means templating, fabrication, a crew to demo and haul out the old tops, plumbing disconnect and reconnect, backsplash repair, and usually drywall patching where the old backsplash pulled away. The slab is often less than half the invoice.

Resurfacing skips all of it. Your existing substrate — laminate, tile, cultured marble, dated granite — stays exactly where it is and becomes the base layer. We clean it, profile it, bond to it, and build the new surface on top. The result is harder than the material underneath, seamless, and non-porous.

Built for Arizona homes specifically

This matters more here than most places. Phoenix-area kitchens see interior surface temperatures that swing hard between an air-conditioned morning and a west-facing afternoon in July. Natural stone expands and contracts through that cycle, and over years that shows up as hairline movement at the seams. Engineered quartz has a separate problem: its resin binders are not UV-stable, which is why manufacturers void warranties on quartz in direct sun and outdoor kitchens.

Lab stone is a poured system with flex built into the polymer, and the pigment is UV-stabilized and sealed under the topcoat. It also cures as one continuous sheet — no grout lines and no seams for monsoon-season humidity to work into. We wrote a longer breakdown of how each material behaves in this climate in our Arizona heat and sun guide.

What a job actually looks like

  1. Free consultation. We look at your existing surface, confirm it is a candidate for bonding, and measure. Some substrates need prep work; we tell you before you book, not after.
  2. Finish selection. You pick from our finishes — Calacatta, Carrara, Statuary, Nero Marquina, Thassos, Emperador, and the solid Pure line among others. Browse 39 Phoenix-area kitchen and bath looks to see how each finish reads.
  3. Install day. Prep, bond coat, pour, vein work by hand, topcoat. 8–12 hours for a typical kitchen. Light use same evening, full cure over the following days.
  4. Warranty. Every install is backed by our Diamond Warranty.

Who runs it

Build-A-Counter was founded by Monte, who started the company after watching Phoenix homeowners spend slab money on materials that were never designed for a desert climate. He still runs consultations personally across the Valley.
